Gyumri Art Week is an annual festival for contemporary art in Armenia. It is designed to stimulate artistic research and experimentation in the region and provoke debates on actual cultural and societal processes.
The event comprises exhibits in Gyumri and Yerevan, and a series of art residencies in Stepanavan, Odzun, Spitak, and Shorzha. Next month’s sixteen-day Gyumri Art Week is titled City&Beyond.
For its 3rd edition, Gyumri Art Week is revisiting the area where it stages its festival, focusing on the city as an ever-changing living organism. In this year's program, visitors will encounter a range of stories from artists and collectives reflecting on urbanism, sustainability, community, and connectivity. These stories ask fundamental questions about naming words, architectural plans and styles, public monuments, natural landscapes, social structures, cultural paradigms, and modern cities’ ecosystems.
For the second year in a row, the festival is co-curated by Victoria Ilyushkina (CYLAND Video Archive), who has prepared a special video program comprising works by 20 artists and art groups.
The 3rd edition of Gyumri Art Week pays tribute to Yervand Kochar (1899-1979), an avant-garde painter, experimenter, inventor of a new type of artistic and plastic expression, a remarkable figure of Armenian Modernism and Cubism.
